The early music ensemble Svobodné hudební bratrstvo (Free Music Brotherhood) was established in 2004 in Prague, Czech Republic, as an open association of players for Renaissance and Baroque wind instruments. Most members were brought directly or indirectly to Renaissance and Early Baroque music by musicologist, singer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Pospíšil, founder and artistic director of the Ritornello ensemble.

An important impulse for the work of the ensemble was brought by the French cornetto and recorder player Judith Pacquier, who organized many interpreting courses and concerts in Bohemia. Part of the members then moved to the professional field and founded their own renowned ensembles, such as Capella Ornamentata  or Castello in Aria.

Under the heading of the Svobodné hudební bratrstvo, members can always stand up to the public on condition that their number at a given event is more than one.
